Motivational Books
Help Small Business Owners To Stay Focused
Motivational books are great to give you back or increase your energy, focus and believe in yourself. Sometimes we feel we are alone and don't have anybody who believes in us. We can't imagine that somebody else was in the same situation as we are now. And then ... we read one of the best business motivational books and feel understood. We see that another small business struggles with the same problems or himself but find a way out. Perhaps you think,
"Is business motivation blessing or hell?"
Before I came to the United States of America and started a small business, I read many books for personal improvement and motivation. Many speak out of theory, and it is nice to read but not really practical.
Focus
What I like about American small business books is that a lot of them speak out of experience, written by small business owners themselves. One book I really love is the book
"The E-Myth"
by
Michael Gerber.
I will never forget his sentence " Work on your business, not in your business". After reading his book, I looked at opening and building up a small business differently. If we look at the business as our "baby", don't trust that our employees will do a good or perhaps better job as we do and don't focus on building our business, we will stay as a technician forever and work our butts off.
Creativity
"Thinking out of the box" - did you hear this before? Why would we expect a different outcome if we do the same thing repeatedly? I am very creative but to think out of the way we are used to needs more. We do one thing and realize it doesn't work independent but in a system. For example, you sell ice cream. The economy is slow and you don't make much money. To cover your expenses you raise your price per scope with the hope to cover your bills with this action. Thinking in systems means you go through the whole business process - customer service, marketing, finances, business management - before you raise the price per scope to find out what it means for your business.
Daniel Pink
wrote a great book about creativity. The title is "A Whole New Mind". It speaks about how red-brain thinkers will be the future business developers and makers in our 21st century. Read it and start "thinking in systems".
Ideas
I read that we all have an average of at least 10 new business ideas every day. It is amazing, right? However, most of us don't do anything with these ideas.I always have a little note book with me and write them down. But since I found
Donny Deutsch's
book "The Big Idea" I finally have a big idea blueprint that helps me find out if my idea is valuable and practical. Donny Deutsch provides a twelve-step road map to help us launching our business, born out of the big business idea.
Flexibility / Staying Open To Changes
Before I read the book
"Who moved my cheese?"
by Spencer Johnson, I really thought I am so flexible. After I read this small booklet (it will only take you few hours) I realized that I have a lot to learn about flexibility.Perhaps we are all getting comfortable after serving our customers for months or years. It is part of the human behavior to get used to things or situations and then take them as normal. Great motivational books such as "Who
moved my cheese?"
make it easy to understand that changes are part of our lives and it is better to deal with and expect them as to be scared of. Let us change our "stinking thinking" to become more successful! Motivational books are great to bring back the excitement, energy and passion we felt at the beginning as we
started our business
. Don't let anything or anybody take this away from us.
