Multi-Level Marketing (MLM)As I moved to the United States four years ago I had to wait for my green card and wasn't allowed to work. I used this time to educate myself about the job opportunities I would have and also about the very common mlm system (multi-level marketing) in the United States. I guess the mlm system is not very common in Europe. I heard it only in combination with a some few cosmetic products or Tupperware.There are endless companies on the market in the USA that approach people who are looking for a second income, home-stay moms or dads, and retired professionals to start a biz as a multi-level marketing representative. I personally tried it as a business for 1 1/2 years as a cosmetic rep and must say that I made money with it but it took a lot of my time, money (for marketing, traveling, communication, etc.). At the end I took a 8 - 5 job outside my home that would pay for my time and commuting and still leaves me valuable time for myself and my family.
Three most important things BEFORE you start a home-based business:1. Time:Make sure to organize your day in a way that there is enough uninterrupted work time. To stop every few minutes to take care of your laundry, your child or your dog changes a 5 hour workday to a 15 hour workday.2. Money: Before you start a business, set up a business plan, marketing plan and financial plan. Not all small home business ideas are great. This is the only way to figure out what start capital you need and what profit to be successful. I made this mistake. As I started the mlm business, I invested my personal money without having a financial plan in place. I made money with it but had to pay a lot for marketing material, travel expenses and communication I didn't expect. My sales were great but I only had a very small amount of profit left every month. 3. Value: What are you willing to give up to work from home? It sounds great not to travel to work anymore, have the power to organize your time, no boss to discuss tasks, or colleagues who disturb you. My experience is that it is hard, especially at the beginning, to be focused on your tasks, organize your time wisely and not let your personal life interrupt you. To create a time management plan and task priority plan is very helpful.
